The NFL Draft is over and Steven and Jeff share their opinions on what all the teams did. Since there was plenty of NFL News to talk about, and the guys covering the entire AFC, the show was a little longer than usual.
The guys start with some NFL News, including QB Ben Roethlisberger and his latest apology and deciding not to appeal his suspension. The guys also talk about the Patriots releasing LB Adalius Thomas, the Jets releasing 9-time Pro Bowl G Alan Faneca and still owing him $5.25 million, the Titans agreeing to terms with undrafted RB LeGarrette Blount from Orgeon despite reports that Blount had signed with the 49ers and undrafted TE Scott Sicko and his decision to turn down NFL offers because he was undrafted.
The guys then turned their talks to the AFC teams and focus on what those teams did in the draft. The guys agreed that the Bills and Jaguars did not have spectacular drafts, nor did the Colts for that matter. They also agreed that the Ravens, Dolphins and Jets had solid drafts. The guys disagreed on the Patriots draft while they both were uncertain of the Chiefs, Texans and Steelers draft.
One thing that was certain, they had plenty of opinions on the Denver Broncos and all the draft moves. Plus the guys talk about how they feel about the new NFL Draft format.
Grate show guys
Great show as always guys, but I have got a little question which I hope you can answer.
I know that Dez Bryant was suspended for lying about meeting Delon Sanders, but my question is why was it a problem that Dez met Delon? Or that he lied about meeting him? If he tested positive for a drug, or was arrested by the police for breaking the law I can understand why he was suspended; but just for lying that he met an ex pro bowler seems odd to me or am I missing something? Cheers
According to Oklahoma State, Bryant violated NCAA Bylaw 10.1, which addresses “unethical conduct” and includes “Knowingly furnishing the NCAA or the individual’s institution false or misleading information concerning the individual’s involvement in or knowledge of matters relevant to a possible violation of an NCAA regulation.”
Bryant was asked by the NCAA if he had met with Sanders, trained with Sanders and met any potential agents that worked with Sanders. Bryant answered NO to all three questions, meaning he lied to the first two questions because he had lunch with Sanders and jogged with him on another occasion. Since he lied about an investigation, that was cause to suspend him for the rest of the season.
That was it! Nothing evil or sinister, the kid just lied about meeting someone and having lunch with someone. I am not saying it is OK to lie, but there was no huge crime committed.
To put that in more context, it appears Sanders has been mentoring the kid for some time in one form or another, which is a good thng obviously. However, the NCAA was investigating if Bryant was in breach of the prohibition on students signing for an agent and if Sanders was influencing him. Bryant wasn’t sure of the rules (by his own admission), so lied. Lying to investigators in any field is usually taken pretty seriously.
In addition to the character concerns raised by not knowing the rules in the first place and then lying because he thought he might have done something wrong, maybe some teams were also put off by Bryant subsequently signing with Eugene Parker, a close associate of…. you guessed it, Deion Sanders, the man who never spoke to Bryant about agents. Parker is apparently also the guy who advised Crabtree last year and we all know how well that went!
Hopefully the Cowboys can get this kid some good advice and he turns into the great player he appears to have the potential to be.
Great show guys! i have to say i agree with Jeff about the quality of ESPN’s coverage it was poor. I watched on NFL.com on day 2 and it was a much better format, Rich Eisen is just the master and the way he handled that confusion at the start of round 2, with the trades and the piling up of picks, was both brilliant and hilarious! “The Commisioner is in the bull pen!”
Ty Law, Asante Samuel, Darelle Revis, DeAngelo Hall, Terrance Newman, Dre Bly… all cornerbacks under 6ft … i think mccourty will be fine…. go PATS!!!!
More on the Dez Bryant story from my 15.5 year old son… because he attends a responsible HIGH SCHOOL, he is well versed in NCAA rules and what might interfere with his eligibility to play in college. He is a sophomore JV baseball player. If he has been taught this by age 15, then Bryant should have known the rules and certainly the consequences of lying out of fear of not knowing the rules. All the more reason to tell the truth.
When asked in Kazakhstan by a federal agent if I was American, I thought about lying and singing “Oh, Canada” but thought better of it when it occurred to me that 1) I had no idea what the ramifications of the answer were, and 2) he would eventually find out anyway. Not the same situation, but telling the truth was scary.
Hey guys- great show as always.
The reason why San Diego didn’t draft a CB because they aquired Nathan Vasher and Donald Strickland in Free Agency. They also drafted Antoine Cason last year in the first round.
And Jeff the last running back drafted from the WAC was Ladainian Tomlinson because TCU didn’t leave the WAC till 2001-2002 season and LT was drafted after the 2000-2001 season
Great show as always guys.
At the start the whole “street cred” comment got me thinking….
Steven = Will Smith AKA Fresh Prince
Jeff = Alfonso Ribeiro AKA Carlton Banks
Sorry for throwing you under the bus Jeff!
Also who in the world was doing the measurements for your kitchen?! JaMarcus Russell? With Ryan Leaf supervising? Come on man take the new counter they owe you
JaMarcus Russel gets alot crap these days, showing up to training camp looking like a balloon justifies most of it. I still remember his college days, and he looked really good back then which reminds you why he was picked first overall.
I would not say the book is out on Russel yet, I believe that he is physically one of the better QBs in the league. If the Raiders release him I would jump on him as a 3rd string QB, after a few seasons I would not be surprised if he matured and started to play with some of the desire we saw during his college days. For some reason Seattle and San Francissco comes to mind immediately when I try to think of potential landing places although I seriously doubt they will pull the trigger.
Once again a very good show, I started to listen to ESPN Football Today during the offseason since 120 minutes from you guys apparently is not enough to please me and even if the guys at ESPN are good they usually just remind me how good you actually are. Cudos for Jeff & Steven
Another thing you have to take into consideration for the Patriots is the fact they traded their third round pick (89th overall) to Carolina for their 2nd round pick next year.
Factor in the Raiders number one pick for Richard Seymour and the Patriots have 2 1st’s and 2 2nd’s. Next year they can make huge moves to go up the board or trade for someone established in the league.
Trust the hoodie, give into to the Dark Side
I have no idea if Tebow will make it as an NFL quarterback, and I fully agree that McDaniels’s fate is now tied to Tebow’s. But I think you’re wrong that the Broncos could have waited to get him until after Clausen was picked. The Bills wanted Tebow for sure, and would have made a move if they’d been able. Given how badly they wanted Tebow, I think it made sense to move up and get him.
I laughed like heck with Jeff when they were doing the Ozzie Newsome skit, I loved how Jeff did the sort of laugh lawyers use in court or like some evil Doctor Who villain (only Brits will get that).
I’m finding the mockery of the Broncos draft hilarious, for years its been my team (Oakland) which has been pilloried and where I’ve laughed at my own team’s picks they’ve been so bad. Now the Broncos are following no discernible plan, and the Silver and Black now have one hell of a defense and hopefully a middling offense that will do enough to get the job done.
Very enjoyable podcast, looking forward very much to the next one!
Guys, Robert Johnson is a stud from Utah and was not a reach. He is a play maker and has a style similar as Ed Reed not as good but similar.
I told several Raider fans here in Napa your comment that Al Davis was told the NFL’s draft began Saturday and not Thursday. They, as I, think that is very funny.
I’ve been all for Al/Hair bashing in recent years seeing what a mess the team and organisation has been and the fact he really does needs some skin lotion and a pedicure, but isn’t it time he got some credit??? The team and organisation are looking in decent shape for the first time in ages. We have had a good draft, a good QB come to our team, a new offensive co-ordinator and not fired our head coach for once. Progress for the Silver and Black, and I’m giving Al his due here.
Good show guys, just had one major complaint… You guys were extremely critical of the 5th-7th round picks. They’re late round picks; that’s when you’re supposed to reach for guys you really like but aren’t big-time guys, when you’re supposed to add some depth to positions that you don’t feel comfortable about. 5th-7th round picks just can’t be expected to be immediate contributors their first season, let alone until maybe their 3rd or 4th season.
Guys, sorry, but got to disagree with you on the whole Tebow thing. Nothing to do with whether he is NFL-ready/ NFL calibre/ whatever. Simply this – Broncos stayed true to their board. Can’t criticise them for doing it, yet praise others. They recognise WR as a need, and got who they wanted. Maybe Bryant is better, but they went against character issues (or maybe just graded him lower than most). Steven’s points about the what Bryant “did” wrong is fair, but irrelevant if the Broncos assess differently.
As for Tebow, its all conjecture and opinion. There were rumours he would go late 1st round, and if that high on Broncos board, then they were right to trade up to get him. Saying he’d still be there at 48 or 85 is just guesswork. Would the LA Jags/ Bills/ Mad Al not have taken him by then? Did they overpay? Yes, probably. Is Clausen (and McCoy) a better NFL QB? Again, yes, probably. Should they have traded for Brady Quinn if they were even thinking of Tebow? Maybe not. Is McDaniels now wedded to Tebow? Almost certainly.
But he’s there as Head Coach, and wants a strong-charactered team, and had the guts to stick with his beliefs and draft board.
Don’t get me wrong, when they’re 2-6, Joshie could be in trouble…!
I am not sure I am posting on the right show, since there has been so many lately. which is a very good thing :-)
but… heres a litt fingerpointing from me, not so far from throwing under the bus…
soccer. premier league soccer… I am a lifelong tottenham fan, and it has been a great sesons, ending with participation in next years champions league. but I was a little upset when you guys talked about it in the podcast. first of all, steven, why did you choose the team of the dark side? it is a fact that osama bin laden was a arsenalsupporter, season ticket holder, while living in england. as a spurs fan I am certain he got thrown out from highbury for not being evil enough…
and second… spurs coming 4 or better is a very good season, sort of like the jets reaching the conference championship game. the team which name shall not be said ending 3 is more like colts getting there… not a horrible season, but not all that was to be expected…
Good to hear you give props to the Browns on your draft review, I think they are heading in the right direction for the first time in a long time.
I am going out on a limb to say that they will sweep the Steelers this year!
