Steven’s Take:
Not sure that Mike Pettine has any other choice at the moment. However, saying that he would like to go with the more experienced player is an interesting way of going about making his decision.
I still think that Pettine knows he cannot start Johnny Manziel and then pull him in favor of Brian Hoyer later on in the season. By making this choice now, Pettine is actually helping Manziel not hurting him. With their first three games scheduled at Pittsburgh and then at home against New Orleans and Baltimore, the Browns could be staring at 0-3 in the face. If that is the case, it would be easy to make the move to Manziel during their Week 4 bye and have Manziel make his first start against Tennessee in Week 5.
I was hoping Manziel would get the nod…..I was really looking forward to it. But, this was the only move he could make.
Spot on Steve with the first game comment. I think that Johnny would have had his confidence smashed. Let Hoyer have the start of the season. If he goes well pressures off of JF and he can sit and learn. If Hoyer takes the beating and has a rough time then this will be the time to bench him.
It’s a real shame for Hoyer, think he is onto a more of a hiding to nothing for his career than JF. It was just looking promising before that injury last year.
