Jim Irsay Suspended

NFL.com is reporting that Jim Irsay was suspended six games and fined him $500,000 for violating the league’s Personal Conduct Policy. That $500,000, is the maximum fine under league rules.

The suspension starts at 5 p.m. ET. on Wednesday, September 3, 2014 and will last until after the Colts’ game against the Houston Texans on October 9th.

Steven’s Take:
Another slap on the wrist of another billionaire NFL owner. Sure Irsay cannot have contact with the team for six games, but that’s not even six whole weeks, since the Colts have a Thursday night game in Week 6, Irsay only has to stay away for five weeks and one day.

The financial fine is a joke as well. Sure it is the maximum penalty allowed under league rules, but who wrote the league rules? Owners!

When a player gets suspended for six games, he stands to lose a little over 35 percent of his salary for the year. The Colts reportedly made just north of $285 million dollars in revenue last year, Irsay’s meager fine of $500K represents .1% of that revenue. This seems awfully one-sided against the players.

One good thing to come out of this, Irsay will have to go through drug testing.
